Comprising graduates of Polish academies of music, the quartet was formed in 2016 as the New Music Quartet (the name was changed after two years). The ensemble won the First Prize and three special prizes at the Karol Szymanowski International String Quartet Competition in Katowice in 2017, the Förderpreis and the Bärenreiter Urtext Preis at the International Chamber Music Competition ‘Franz Schubert und die Musik der Moderne’ in Graz in 2018 and the Third Prize at the Karol Szymanowski International Competition in Katowice in 2018. As part of master classes, the artists have collaborated with numerous distinguished personalities and ensembles, such as the Alban Berg Quartett, the Ysaÿe Quartet, the Artemis Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, the Kwartet Śląski, the Zehetmair Quartet, the Apollon Musagète Quartet, the Vienna Brahms Trio, the Penderecki Piano Trio, Alain Meunier, Avrim Levitan and Marek Moś.

The Ãtma Quartet have been invited to festivals in Switzerland (the Davos Festival), France (the Quatuors à Bordeaux and the Festival des Musiques d’Été du Château de Lourmarin), the Netherlands (the Zeist Music Days), Spain (Musethica) and Poland (the Karol Szymanowski Music Days in Zakopane and the International Festival ‘Emanacje’ in Lusławice). Since 2018, the quartet have taken part in a project called Le Dimore del Quartetto, which popularises Polish music in Italy, and in the French programme ProQuartet.
